Supporting during childbirth: A guide for partners and close relatives

Att vara ett stöd under förlossningen: En guide för partners och närstående

Hi everyone! Today, I wanted to share some valuable tips on how to be the best possible support during one of life's most transformative moments – childbirth! Whether you're a partner, a close relative, or just a good friend, there's a lot you, as a support person, can do to help during this special time. Read on!!

Educate yourself and prepare mentally
Childbirth is not just a physical process for the person giving birth; it's an emotional roller coaster for everyone involved. Read up on childbirth, attend childbirth preparation classes, and talk to others who have experienced it. Discuss your own thoughts and feelings with each other, how you think you can show support, and ask what you can contribute. Be curious. Having a basic understanding of what might happen allows you to be a calm and stable presence in the room. Don't forget that you also need to be able to cope, so fuel up with things that give you energy and strength!

Communication is key!
Talk to the birthing person about her expectations and wishes. Does she want peace and quiet or encouraging cheers? Does she prefer massage or does she want to be left alone? Knowing this in advance can make a big difference during childbirth. Sometimes it can be difficult for the birthing person to say what she wants, and that's when you, as a support person, may need to step in!

Have a plan, but be flexible
It's good to have a birth plan, but remember that things rarely go exactly as planned. Be ready to adapt to the situation and be the support the birthing person needs, even if it means new plans than those originally intended!

Be present, both physically and emotionally!
Be present during childbirth. This can mean holding hands, giving encouraging words, hugs and closeness, or simply contributing with a quiet presence. Your physical and emotional presence in the room is one of the strongest forms of support! Remember that love, closeness, and gentle touch boost oxytocin - the birth hormone! 💕

Don't forget to take care of yourself
Remember that you also need strength and energy. Eat well, rest when you can, and make sure you also take care of your own needs. You're doing this as a team!

Celebrate and enjoy your little one, life begins now!
Don't forget to celebrate this incredible achievement and appreciate the birthing person for the fantastic effort she has made. A little encouragement and appreciation can do wonders for mood and self-esteem. Also, give yourself a pat on the back; your support and presence were incredibly important in helping your little baby into the world.

You did it, together! 🌟

Last but certainly not least
Being a good support during childbirth is not just about being physically present. It's about being a partner on the journey, being empathetic, flexible, and encouraging. Remember that every birth is unique, and the most important thing is that together you create a safe and loving experience. Good luck!
